Matt Conerly, NOC Enid Baseball player (1B/3B), is interning at St. Mary’s Hospital in Enid this semester. Matt is a sophomore from Edmond majoring in Mathematics. He graduated from Edmond Memorial High School in 2016.
At St. Mary’s, Conerly’s duties include discussions with different departments of the hospital the needs from the biomedical staff and assisting in the repair of broken equipment, as well as testing equipment to ensure it is working properly.
Conerly’s plans after NOC include majoring in biochemistry with a minor in math and to pursue acceptance into medical school.
Conerly described the value of the internship program and how it prepares him for the future.
“The internship helps develop critical thinking and teamwork skills and also will be helpful when applying to medical school,” Conerly said.
What part of the internship did Conerly enjoy the most?
“The critical thinking opportunities,” he said. But the internship also made me respect and appreciate everyone in the hospital for what they do, not just the doctors and nurses.”
Conerly’s supervisor at St. Mary’s was Troy Wood, manager of Healthcare Technology Management.
“Troy (Wood) has been extremely helpful and has provided me with knowledge well beyond just the biomedical field,” Conerly said. “Through the internship, Troy has done everything he can to help prepare me for the workforce and life after college.”
NOC Enid Math instructor Kristi Orr supervised Conerly’s internship.
“I am thankful that St. Mary’s was so willing and eager to provide an internship opportunity for Matt,” Orr said. “It really is a win-win situation for both of them. As an instructor and advisor, I get the opportunity to meet many star students who start their college career at NOC Enid, and I enjoy keeping in touch with them as they continue to find success at their next college and in their careers.”
“Internships are a great way for all Enid businesses to build relationships with these students while they are in our community,” Orr added. “I highly encourage any business in the Enid area to learn more about setting up job shadowing and internship programs by contacting NOC.”
