The Northern Oklahoma College Internship Program continues to prepare students for the work place as NOC student Cindy Love recently completed an internship with the United Way in Blackwell.
Love, a 1975 graduate from Ponca City, has been working at the United Way in Blackwell under the tutelage of executive director Charlene Flanery.
Her primary duties include maintaining accounts in QuickBooks, prepare and make deposits at financial institution, reconcile bank statements, prepare financial reports, and assist in any other way that is needed.
She currently owns a tax preparation business in Ponca City.
What does Love plan to do with the new skills?
“I plan on adding bookkeeping/accounting services to my current tax business,” Love said.
Love said the internship works concurrent with her NOC classwork.
“In one of my current classes I am learning to use QuickBooks,” Love said. “This internship has given me an opportunity to put my classroom knowledge of QuickBooks and accounting to practice in the business world.”
What has been the best part about the internship?
“Besides the fact that this is an amazing chance to get first-hand experience in my chosen field, it has allowed me the opportunity to help a non-profit organization at the same time, Love added.
Love said her experience with her internship supervisor has been terrific.
“I report to Charlene Flanery, executive director for United Way of Blackwell,” Love said. “Charlene (Flanery) has been great to work for, she made me feel welcome from the first day I walked in. She has allowed me take over handling the accounting records for the organization, while always being available if assistance is needed.”
Flanery said she is appreciative of the partnership of the NOC Internship Program.
“Blackwell United Way is very thankful to have the opportunity to work with NOC by providing an internship opportunity for business student, Cindy Love,” said Blackwell United Way Executive Director Charlene Flanery. “Cindy is working closely with me learning non-profit management, accounting, and bookkeeping skills. Skills such as Quickbooks data input, preparing financial reports, keeping accurate records of donor pledges, coordinating and working with board members has allowed her to use her business education in a real – life setting.
“She is very knowledgeable, easy to work with, and takes initiative when performing her tasks,” Flanery added. “Although her internship is nearing the end, she has been a pleasure to work with and we wish her the best in her future studies and endeavors.”
Northern Oklahoma College Business Division Chair Cara Beth Johnson said, "Cindy is a phenomenal student who brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to her internship with the Blackwell United Way.”
Johnson, who oversees the business internships added, “The ability to put her academic skills in accounting and Quickbooks to work in a real world setting is invaluable to her future professional endeavors, as well as a great benefit to the United Way. The Northern Oklahoma College Business Division couldn't be more proud of the work that she's doing."
